Auto theft suspects' run ends in capture

Two documented Surreno gang members were arrested Tuesday, March 3 after they were chased in a stolen car and tried to escape on foot into a Ceres neighborhood.

The incident unfolded at 11:09 a.m. when the owner of stolen car called 911 to report he was following his own car as it was being driven on eastbound Service Road toward Mitchell Road. The car was followed northbound on Faith Home Road at which time Ceres police units caught up. An officer attempted to make a felony stop but the driver accelerated.

The chase went westbound on Whitmore Avenue at speeds up to 60 mph until it turned northbound onto Louise Avenue and east onto Astor Court where the two males bailed on foot and jumped fences.

Police set up a perimeter and in four minutes had flushed out both men after they were warned that a canine would be released on them.

Driver Jose Herrarte, 23, of Modesto, was arrested for evading police, violation of probation, vehicle theft, resisting arrest and possession of stolen property. Passenger Rodrigo Alvarado, 21, of Modesto, was arrested on charges of possession of stolen property, resisting arrest and violating the terms of his probation for a prior assault with a deadly weapon.
