A 44-year-old Ceres man who was allegedly driving with two children in his car while he had three times the legal limit of alcohol in his system to legally drive was arrested Sunday evening.

At 11:44 p.m., Ceres Police Officer Tyler Wilson was patrolling the area of Mitchell Road and Nicholas Way when he stopped the driver of a Nissan Sentra for violating the vehicle code. Driver Maurice Purnell, 44, of Ceres, appeared to be under the influence of alcohol and his breath smelled of booze. After failing field sobriety tests, Purnell was arrested and provided breath samples more than three times the legal limit for an adult.

Purnell was booked into the Stanislaus County Public Safety Center on charges of DUI and child endangerment.
