A 28-year-old Modesto woman was arrested Sunday afternoon after employees of Kmart had to break into her car and rescue her child who had been left for over 30 minutes in sweltering heat.

The woman left the infant in the car unattended inside the store parking lot and went shopping. Firefighters took a temperature reading in the car and it registered 113 degrees.

The incident was reported at 3 p.m. Officer Joe Wren arrived after store employees rescued the child and tendered care inside the store. The woman was interviewed despite limited English skills and then arrested for felony child endangerment. The child was taken to Ceres Police Department and then turned over to Child Protective Services.
