Man arrested for firing gun outside Ninth Street house

A convicted felon who is prohibited from having access to firearms and ammunition, was arrested early Saturday morning after firing a handgun outside of a home in the 3400 block of Ninth Street in Ceres.

The sound of gunfire was called into the Ceres Police dispatch Center at 12:29 a.m. Officers surrounded the home and called out the occupants of the home on the bullhorn. Two juveniles and a woman came out and told them a man was still inside of the home. Shell casings in the front yard were found. Officers entered the house and located Anthony Mendez, 35, of Ceres, asleep in his room. They arrested him and located a handgun with no serial number, a large box of live ammunition and a high capacity magazine.

Mendez was booked into the Stanislaus County Public Safety Center for several felonies including unlawful discharge of a firearm, being a felon in possession of a firearm and felon in possession of live ammunition.

Police did not find anyone injured as the result of the shots fired.
