The California Highway Patrol is investigating a Tuesday evening shooting in which a teen motorist sustained a non-life threatening shot to the thigh as he was driving up Highway 99 through Keyes.

CHP Public Information Officer Aaron Say said the shooting was reported at approximately 10 p.m. The shot came from a passing car in the northbound lanes, penetrating the victim’s door and striking him in the leg. The 19-year-old male driver, who was coming home from work, made his way to the 1425 block of Palm Avenue in Ceres where he was picked up by an ambulance and taken to a local hospital.

Little information was available about the type of car used in the shooting.

The next morning at 10:10 a.m. the CHP closed off the northbound lanes at Keyes Road all the way to Service Road in search for a shell casing. The freeway was closed for about two hours.

The CHP was delayed in searching for evidence because resources were diverted to the pedestrian fatality that occurred on Highway 99 at Carpenter Road in Modesto at approximately 1:34 a.m. Wednesday.

In that incident, a 63-year-old Manteca woman was northbound in a 2015 grey Kia sedan when she struck a man walking or running from the center median to east shoulder. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene.
