Police stumble unto ID theft operation
Ceres Cop Car

An early Monday morning car stop of a woman pulling into the Microtel Inn on Herndon Road led to the seizure of evidence pointing to an identity theft operation.

As a result, Ashley Chavan, 28, of Ceres, faces charges of identity theft, forgery, receiving stolen property, probation violation, possession of methamphetamine, driving on a suspended license.

Officer Matthew Berlier saw Chavan pull into the parking lot at 12:43 a.m. and learned that she was on probation for a prior drug conviction. Berlier learned that Chavan was renting a room at the motel and searched the room. There he found numerous ID cards belonging to other people along with a fake ID in which she pasted her photo over another woman's ID. Berlier also located a file folder filled with personal IDs and stolen mail.

Police also seized a laptop and external hard drive.
