Police unsure why teen led them on chase

A Modesto teen was arrested early Friday after leading police on a 4.6-mile chase but police are unsure why he took great lengths to run.

Officer Jesus Salinas attempted to stop a vehicle at Evans Road and Whitmore Avenue at 12:19 a.m. after seeing the driver running around the roadway. Thinking the behavior to be suspicious, Officer Salinas tried to pull over Victor Serrano, 19, of Modesto. Serrano failed to stop and led police on a chase that ended when he drove into a dead-end at Wesley Drive and Mock Avenue. During the chase Serrano hit a parked car causing minor damage and attempted to fight off officers, said Ceres Police Department spokesman Lt. James Yandell.

After a brief struggle, Serrano was taken into custody after being slightly injured.

When asked why he ran, police reported that Serrano told them that because he felt he was going to be treated badly and that he was upset over a recent breakup.

"It appears he had no reason to run from us," said Lt. James Yandell of Ceres Police Department.

Serrano was arrested and charged with leading police on a pursuit and obstructing an officer.
