Police chased down a Walmart shoplifting suspect who fought being arrested only to subdue after two baton strikes on Wednesday evening, Nov. 25.

The store called police at 10:27 p.m. after a loss prevention officer saw the theft and the man leaving. Officer Justin Canatsy arrived and found suspect William Oden, 34, of Modesto, running from the store officer near Starbucks at Mitchell and Hatch. Canatsy chased after Oden who refused orders to stop and caught up with him. Oden put up a fight, said Ceres Police Department spokesman Lt. Chris Perry, but complied after Canatsy struck him twice with his baton.

Oden was arrested and charged with resisting arrest and commercial burglary.
