A June 27 car stop for expired registration led a Ceres Police officer to find the driver in possession of multiple shaved keys which are commonly used in auto thefts.

Officer Alexis Ochoa was on patrol when he conducted a 2:40 a.m. traffic stop on a silver-colored Honda Accord in the area of Herndon and Luchessi. The driver, Jose Mercado Torres, 28, of Ceres was unlicensed and on probation for auto theft. Torres was detained and searched.

Officer Ochoa located a purse in the car filled with multiple shaved keys. Torres admitted they belonged to him and that he keeps them in case he finds a car he knows he can easily steal. Torres was booked for possession of burglary tools and driving without a license.
