A man who broke into a back yard in the 2200 block of Calcagno Street and swung a hatchet at the occupant who lived there was arrested on Wednesday morning, Aug. 23.

At 10:59 a.m. a woman at the house heard her dog barking and went into the back yard to investigate and was confronted by a man later identified as Joseph Campbell, 34, of Ceres.  Campbell was armed with a hatchet and began swinging at the woman and yelling that he would hurt her. She retreated inside her home, locked the door and called the police. She looked out the window and saw Campbell remove a gas can from the yard and flee eastbound on Calcagno.

Officer Jesus Salinas checked the area and found Campbell near Mauna Loa Drive and Leilani Way. With canine partner Veko, Officer Salinas got Campbell to drop to the ground. He was arrested and booked for robbery, assault with a deadly weapon, threats intended to terrorize and vandalism.

Police said that Campbell broke some fence boards to gain entry into the yard as well as a neighbor’s fence on Mauna Loa Drive.
