A 21-year-old Modesto woman was arrested Saturday morning after she sped away from an officer and, when stopped, appeared to be drunk.

Officer Eric Gallegos was on patrol at 7:39 a.m. and saw a car speeding southbound in the 1600 block of Richland Avenue. He caught up to the vehicle which was moving over 60 mph. Despite lights and siren the driver, Victoria Barreto, 21, of Modesto, gained speed as she turned southbound onto Herndon Road from Richland Avenue. Barreto made an abrupt turn onto Ploutz Road and pulled over suddenly and stopped. Officer Gallegos ordered Barreto out of the car at gunpoint and handcuffed her. That’s when he detected the odor of alcohol on her breath. She displayed other signs of intoxication and was arrested after failing a field sobriety test.

Barreto faces charges of DUI and evading a police officer.
