A memorial mass was held Monday at St. Stanislaus Catholic Community in Modesto for Helen R. McCarthy, 91, of Hughson. She died April 28, 2009 at Samaritan Village in Hughson.
The Colonial Chapel of Franklin and Downs was in charge of arrangements.
Born April 22, 1918 in Modesto to Antone and Amy Reis, Helen grew up raised in Ceres, and graduated from Ceres High School. She also graduated from Modesto Junior College, where she studied nursing. For more than 30 years, Helen worked at Gould Medical. Mrs. McCarthy enjoyed travelling with friends and family and visited many countries. She was interested in local history and antiques, served as a docent at McHenry Mansion and volunteered at McHenry Museum. She also enjoyed jazz music and volunteered at the Monterey Jazz Festival. Over the years she provided loving care to many cats, dogs and chickens.
She leaves behind her loving caring family at Samaritan Village, her godchildren and the Amador and Bettencourt families.
