Hershell Trent Young passed this life on Dec. 1, 2013.
Born to Elza and Ara Young in Lenna, Okla., Hershell was a longtime member of the Ceres Church of Christ, and a founding member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 10293 in Ceres.

Hershell served as the chaplain of the post for over 20 years. He officiated services at Santa Nella National Cemetery, and also, local cemeteries for other fallen veterans.

He was a proud veteran and served in World War II in the U.S. Navy. Hershell earned his Purple Heart medial when the USS Osprey, a minesweeper sank when clearing a pathway for the D-Day invasion. He loved to tell the adventures of his time served. While in the Navy, he married his first wife, Gladys Edwards and their union lasted 38 years until her death. Mr. Young worked for F.M.C. in Modesto for over 32 years, where he retired.
In his youth, Hershell attended Ceres schools and graduated in 1941.

He is survived by his wife of 30 years, Estle Ford Young; his children, David and wife Cindy of Ceres, and daughter Arlene Carson of Ceres; three stepchildren, Pamela Hope (and husband David) of Hughson, Glenn Ford (and wife Jennifer), of Hughson, and Carolyn Brown (and husband Jon), of Modesto; and 10 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by seven brothers, Connie, Roy, Arliss, Austin, Otheo, Ezell and Orville.
He was a great man and was loved by all.
Services were held at 10 a.m., on Friday, Dec. 6. Interment immediately followed at the Ceres Memorial Park. Salas Brothers Funeral Chapel was in charge of arrangements.
