Mary Lucille Dow

January 18, 1926 – October 17, 2023

Mary Lucille Dow passed peacefully to heaven at her Ceres home on Tuesday, October 17, 2023.

Lucille was born January 18, 1926 on a homestead near Plainview, Texas, where she lived in her early years before the family moved to Colorado. Lucille graduated from Alamosa High School in the class of 1943. She was working at Woolworth’s candy counter when she caught the eye of Robert Dow. Bob liked to quote a popular song of the day, “I found a million-dollar baby in a five and ten cent store.”

After Bob’s U.S. Marine Corps service they lived in Denver, Colo., with their four children. Lucille was a busy mom involved in many groups with their children, church, sports and scouts. Lucille retired from Jefferson County Public Schools as an administrative assistant.

In February 1979, Bob and Lucille visited his brother Rev. Herb (Barbara) Dow in Modesto and bought a home here while on vacation. In 1987 they moved to Ceres and became active in the community and the United Methodist Church then the Hughson United Methodist Church. Lucille enjoyed membership in Persephone and Eastern Star, Ceres Chapter 296, where she later rose to Worthy Matron.

She enjoyed several hobbies through the years including reading, music, and watching sports. But her special blessings were the times she could be visiting with family.

Preceded in death by her husband of 69 years, Robert Forrest Dow, and by a son, Charles Edward, Lucille is survived by daughters, Barbara (William) Barrick of Santa Clarita, and Janet (John) Hoffman of Redmond, Ore.; her son, Robert (Barbara) Dow, Jr. of Sacramento; 11 grandchildren, Nathan Barrick, Deborah Beddoe, Timothy Barrick, Tamara Rice, Melissa Clinton, Andrea Dow, Sarah Dow, Joel Hoffman, Jeremy Hoffman, Lydia Valenti, Ruth Jones; 27 great-grandchildren, three great-great-grandchildren; and niece Joyce Adele Dow of San Leandro.

The family is grateful to the Satellite Dialysis Centers of Ceres for their compassionate care of Mary Lucille during her eight and a half years on kidney dialysis.
