Norval F. Pohl

Services were held for Norval F. Pohl, 65, formerly of Hughson. He died May 12, 2009 surrounded by his family at his home in Fountain Hills, Ariz., after a year-plus battle with pancreatic cancer.

Born in 1943 in Hughson, Mr. Pohl was raised there and was elected student body president of Hughson High School. He earned his bachelor's degree and a MBA from Fresno State University. He then earned his Ph.D. from Arizona State University. It was there he met his wife, a fellow doctoral student. Pohl enjoyed an extensive career in higher education including several professorships, the former Deanships of the Colleges of Business at Northern Arizona University and the University of Nevada at Las Vegas (UNLV), the former Vice Presidency of Administrative and Financial Affairs at UNLV, the former Presidency of the University of North Texas, and, finally, the former Chancellorship of Embry Riddle Aeronautical University in Prescott, Arizona. Mr. Pohl served on the boards of many businesses and non-profit organizations. His most cherished directorship was that of American Pacific Corporation with whom he served for some 23 years.

He leaves behind his wife of 38 years, Dr. Barbikay Bissell Pohl; his sons, Prescott Pohl and Chandler; his brother, Martin Pohl; his half-brother, Loren; and his grandson, Tennessee Norval.

Remembrances may be sent to a memorial scholarship fund at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in the name of Dr. Norval Pohl. Contributions for the Dr. Norval Pohl Memorial Scholarship may be mailed to: Office of Development, Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, 3700 Willow Creek Road, Prescott, AZ 86301. Checks should be made out to Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, and on the memo line write Pohl Memorial Scholarship.
