Services will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Friday, April 29 at the Sacramento Valley VA National Cemetery in Dixon for Philip Smith, 83, of Ceres. He died April 10, 2011.

Born Dec. 31, 1927 in San Francisco, Philip was an Air Force veteran of World War II. He moved to Ceres over 20 years ago to be close to his beloved grandsons, Kevin and Ryan Calou and became very involved in their lives. For over 20 years he was an active volunteer for the Ceres Dolphin Swim Team where he was dubbed "Grandpa" because he treated all the swimmers as if they were his own. Mr. Smith enjoyed fishing and duck hunting.

He leaves behind his wife of 60 years, Bettie Smith of Ceres; two children, Daniel Smith of Los Angeles and Janel Smith Calou of Ceres; and three grandchildren, Kevin Calou, Ryan Calou and Alexandra D. Smith.
