A memorial service was held Saturday at Monte Vista Chapel in Turlock for Richard "Dick" Brown, 74, of Turlock. He died Dec. 10, 2009 at Emanuel Medical Center in Turlock.

A private graveside service was held at San Joaquin Valley National Cemetery in Santa Nella.

Born January 1935 to Raymond and Hallie (Nutcher) Brown in Turlock, Dick was raised in Escalon and later in Hughson. After he attended Modesto Junior College, he served in the Army from 1955 to 1957. Mr. Brown worked as a salesman for KTUR radio station in Turlock before becoming a police officer for the Modesto Police Department. In 1958, he sustained a spinal cord injury in a water skiing accident. Then he went back to school and received his bachelor's degree from California State University, Stanislaus and was the first student body president. Richard was a school teacher for 42 years at Brown School (now Dutcher School), Tracy Community Christian School and Denair Middle School. He was a director for Christian Berets for 11 years, later pastor and member of the board. He was a member of the alumni board at CSUS, a member of the Gideon's International, and a member of Monte Vista Chapel. Richard will be remembered for his jokes, love for sports, positive spirit and love for Christ.

He leaves behind his three children, Jeffrey Brown of Quebec, Canada, Andrea Brown-Allison of Pittsburgh, Pa., and Jonathan Brown of Elk Grove; his sister, Janet Coykendall of Tracy; his grandchild Quinn Romeo; and Sharon Brown, mother of his children.
