A funeral service was held Monday at Salas Brothers Funeral Chapel for William Ernest Spears, 89, of Hughson. He died May 8, 2012.

Interment was at Lakewood Memorial Park.

Born May 12, 1922 in Western Grove, Ark., to Ott and Charlotte Spears, William was drafted into the Navy in 1944. He lived in Hughson for 65 years. He was a member of Full Gospel Assembly of God Church in Hughson for 59 years. Mr. Spears worked as the ranch foreman for Bruce Matthew and family. Then became a drywall worker with his sons and retired from the Local Carpenters Union at 66. William enjoyed traveling, fishing and hunting.

He leaves behind his wife of 68 years, Melba Spears of Hughson; his children, Rev. Ernest Spears, Ruth Adams, Dave Spears and James Spears; four brothers, Alfred Spears, Leroy Spears, Eugene Spears and Vernon Spears; three sisters, Faye Martin, Lucile Hathcoat and Virginia Hefner; eight grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by Juanita, Arvel and Kenneth Spears.
