Boys water polo team improve to 4-1 in MMC

The Ceres High boys water polo team used a balanced attack to beat Grace Davis in Ceres on Thursday.

With Justen Harper, Joey Rossi, Eric Scudder and Markus Richter leading the way, the Bulldogs posted a 12-6 victory over the Spartans and improved to 4-1 in the Modesto Metro Conference, 6-4 overall.

"They came out hard and played their game," said Ceres coach Sonja Raynes. "They stayed focused."

Harper, Ceres' goalkeeper, blocked 10 shots.

Rossi had five goals, one assist and one steal.

Scudder had four goals, two assists and one steal.

Richter had two goals, two assists and one steal.

Ceres' Vitaly Polovin, Mike Polovin, Cody Frampton, Kyle Fliflet and Jason Weststeyn also contributed.

Vitaly Polovin had one goal.

Mike Polovin had two assists and two steals.

Frampton had two steals.

Fliflet had one assist.

Weststeyn had one steal.

"Our forte is our team work," Raynes said.

Ceres outscored Davis 5-0 in the first quarter and led 8-1 at halftime.

"Defensively, everybody was helping," Raynes said.

"We did not leave anybody open."

Rossi scored four goals in the first half, including two in each quarter.

Scudder scored two goals in the first quarter and one in the second.

Rossi and Scudder watched from the pool deck for most of the fourth quarter.

Raynes opted to rest her top-two players after Vitaly Polovin's goal helped the Bulldogs extend their lead to nine, 12-3, with 4:45 remaining.

Ceres 16, Downey 3

The Bulldogs routed the Knights in Modesto on Tuesday, Sept. 21.

Rossi and Vitaly Polovin each had four goals, Richter had three goals, Scudder had two goals and Harper, Derek Stanhope and Mike Polovin all had one goal for Ceres, which plays host to Johansen tomorrow at 4 p.m. - By DALE BUTLER / Staff Reporter of The Ceres (Calif.) Courier
