Ceres High volleyball team ends streak

Krystle Brown had 11 kills and three blocks, Elisha Ferguson had 23 assists, three ace serves and two kills, Meghan Franksen had 10 kills and five digs, Monica Hall had seven aces and Jennifer Arnold had seven digs for the Ceres High varsity volleyball team, helping the Bulldogs to a 3-1 non-conference victory over East Union Friday night in Ceres.

Ceres had dropped four straight matches, including a 3-2 setback at Turlock on Thursday.

"We were really determined to win after losing that many in a row," said Ceres senior Rachel Strickland.

Added Ceres coach Sue Garcia: "We got the monkey off our back."

Ceres edged East Union by three points, 25-22, in the fourth game.

The Bulldogs overcame an eight-point deficit.

Brown and Franksen had five and four kills, respectively.

Ferguson dished out nine assists.

Ceres led from start to finish in the third game as there were no ties or lead changes.

The Bulldogs scored the first six points and led by as much as 13 points (19-6) in defeating the Lancers 25-18.

Brown ended the game with a block.

"I talked to the girls about improving our blocking," Garcia said. "I think we did a much better job."

Tied at 11-all, Ceres used a 14-10 run to win the second game 25-20.

Ferguson had six assists, Arnold had three digs and Franksen had two kills.

There were six ties and five lead changes.

The Bulldogs blew a seven-point lead in the first game, which they lost 19-25.

The Lancers took control with an 18-5 run.

Amanda Lee led the way for the Lancers. She had 12 digs, 10 kills and seven blocks. Marissa Ta'a had 20 digs, five aces and three kills. Sarah Slade added 10 assists, five digs and four aces.

Turlock tops Ceres

Turlock edged Ceres High 25-22, 21-25, 19-25, 25-16, 15-12 at Turlock High School Thursday night.

The visiting Bulldogs accumulated 42 digs, 28 kills, 17 aces and three blocks in defeat.

Brown had eight kills, seven digs, five aces and two blocks.

Franksen had 11 kills, nine digs and six aces.

Ferguson had 24 assists, eight digs and one kill.

Arnold had 10 digs, two kills and one ace.

Jessica Hunter had five kills, three digs and one ace.

Hall had four aces and two digs. Jessica Mazza had one kill, one block and one dig. Strickland had one dig.
