The Ceres High boys basketball squad lost 53-35 to Modesto High, the top team in the Modesto Metro Conference, Friday night in Modesto.

"We played them tough the whole game," said Ceres senior Derrick Goblirsch.

"We played alright defensively. We just gave them too many second opportunities."

Ryan Vermeulen, Modesto High's 6-foot-10 center, dominated the paint. He scored a game-high 17 points for the Panthers, who improved to 16-7 overall, 9-2 in the MMC. Teammates Sammy Yeager, Levirt Griffin, Kenny Thompson and Dirk Venn added 11, eight, seven and five points, respectively.

No Bulldogs (8-15, 2-9) scored in double figures. Rafael Valencia led the way with a team-high eight points. Zack Wiedenbeck and Bryant Hill added five points. Derrick Goblirsch, Brad Muniz and Kevin Dupree all had four points.

"We're playing for pride now," Goblirsch said. "We have nothing else to play for."

Modesto maintained a six-point lead at halftime.

The Panthers outscored the Bulldogs 27-17 in the second half, including 15-6 in the fourth.

Modesto shot 62 percent (18-for-29) from the free-throw line. Ceres shot zero percent (0-for-2) from the foul line.

Davis beat Ceres High in overtime in Modesto earlier this season.

The Bulldogs posted a 53-40 victory over the Spartans Wednesday night in Ceres.

Wiedenbeck scored a game-high 12 points.

Muniz, Dupree and Rafael Valencia added 10, eight and seven points, respectively.

Matt Schwark and Bryant Hill both had six points.

Jake Laudenslayer and Anthony Mattos scored eight and seven points, respectively, for the Spartans.

Ceres took control after intermission.

The Bulldogs outscored the Spartans 28-14 in the second half.

Davis led by one, 26-25, at halftime.

Ceres shot 57 percent (8-for 14) from the free-throw line.
