It didn't take long for the Ceres Sizzle to break into the victory column.

The 14-and-under competitive softball team opened the 2010 season with a second-place finish in the Cen-Cal Tournament, held May 29-30 in Oakdale.

"Last year's team didn't win a game until the Ceres tournament," coach Linda Mathis said.

Courtney Ahart. Marissa Busler, Tessa Corsaut, Gabby Dias, Brentnie Flippo, Yassmin Garcia, Alexis Ghent, Kailee Glavin, Kaitlin Jimenez, Dallas Kilgore, Adryana Knights and Ariel Knights helped lead the Sizzle to a 3-2 record at Kerr Park. Mike Corsaut, Mario Jimenez and Tom Overby helped coach.

Ceres won two of three games on Saturday, May 29.

The Sizzle dropped their opener, 12-1, to Cen-Cal.

Ceres defeated the Escalon Sting (8-7) and Riverbank Stealth (6-5) later in the day.

On Sunday, May 30, the Sizzle edged the Sting 3-2 in the semifinals.

Ceres lost 2-0 to Cen-Cal in the championship game.

"I'm very pleased with how the girls did considering how we started," Mathis said. "We corrected our mistakes and hit the ball very well."

The Sizzle should experience more success this summer.

"The girls gel well together," Mathis said. "There's no conflict."
