The Ceres Pups Wrestling Club had a busy week recently.

The Pups hosted a camp and competed at a tournament.

The Stanford Clinic was staged at the Pups House in downtown Ceres on Jan. 6.

“It was such a great experience,” said Steve Festa, the club’s president and founder. “We hope to do it again every season as we support Stanford wrestling.”

Ahad Javansalehi, Stanford’s California Regional Training Center head coach and a former Olympian, provided instruction.

“The kids had fun and worked hard while learning wrestling moves,” Festa said. “The drills he was showing us were amazing.”

More than 40 participants, aged 6-13, attended the free clinic.

They received a total of three hours of instruction.

“We want to give these wrestlers the same opportunities we had,” Festa said. “We’re paying it forward. It’s the right thing to do.”

Members of the Pups Wrestling Club traveled to Grace Davis High School in Modesto on Jan. 8 to compete at the San Joaquin Wrestling Association Cupid Bash.

Ceres had 13 individual medalists.

The top three placers in each weight bracket were rewarded.

“We wrestled well,” Festa said. “The kids used the moves we practiced in the room and got results.”

On the girls’ side, Zoey Swartz placed first with a 2-0 record in the 8-and-under weight bracket for 85-pounders.

Kailani Hotel (80 pounds, 2-0 record) placed second.

On the boys’ side, Landon Ormonde placed first with a 3-0 record in the 12-and-under division for 92-pounders.

“They all wrestled tough and earned what they got,” Festa said.
