Man killed in Service Road crash, driver arrested for DUI

A Tuesday evening, Dec. 13 crash on a dark section of Service Road resulted in the death of a man riding on a personal mobility device and the DUI arrest of the female driver who struck him in her car.

The dead man was identified as 41-year-old Daniel Garcia of Modesto.

The crash was reported to the California Highway Patrol at 11:40 p.m. on Dec. 13 on Service Road, east of Esmar Road.

Garcia was riding a personal mobility device within the eastbound lane of Service Road with no light equipment in an area where there are no street lights. Driving eastbound in a Toyota was Kayla Espinoza, 20, of Ceres at 65 mph. She did not take evasive action and struck Garcia from behind.

Espinoza stopped east of the collision scene and called 911.

Garcia was pronounced deceased at the scene.

Espinoza was subsequently arrested for driving under the influence of drugs.

The collision is pending further investigation.
