A service was held Thursday afternoon at Lakewood Funeral Home for Harold J. Newton, 76, of Ceres. He died Sunday, Sept. 12, 2004 at his home.

Burial was at Lakewood Memorial Park.

Born June 2, 1928, Mr. Newton was a native of Little Rock, Ark., and lived in Ceres for seven years. He previously resided in San Leandro. Mr. Newton retired from Del Monte cannery as a machinist. His passions included music, the San Francisco 49ers and San Francisco Giants.

He leaves behind eight children, Michael Newton of San Jose, Ted Newton and Bob Newton, both of Stockton, Mary Ann Gonsalves of Tennessee, Sharon Hadlock of Texas, Patty Eltringham of Modesto, Nancy Newton of Ceres and Linda Nunes of Newark; and 13 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Erma Newton.
