Ceres High School's varsity boys soccer team had a strong showing at the Pitman Pride Cup this past week.

The Bulldogs placed second in Group B.

"We had a good tournament," Ceres High head coach Miguel Saldate said. "We did pretty well considering these were our first games. We have some new players. It's hard."

The Bulldogs compiled a 3-1 record.

Ceres High collected wins against Merced, El Capitan and Kimball.

The Bulldogs lost to Edison.

Cris Torres, Ceres High's leading scorer from a year ago, totaled four goals.

Michael Quintanilla scored twice.

Andres Velasquez, Ulises Diaz and Osvaldo Carrillo chipped in with one goal apiece.

"He (Torres) is hungrier this year," Saldate said.

Torres and Velasquez both scored once during Ceres High's 2-1 win over Merced on Friday.

Edison defeated Ceres High 3-1 on Friday.

Torres prevented the shutout with a goal.

Ceres High shut out El Capitan 4-0 on Saturday.

Torres, Quintanilla, Diaz and Carrillo all tallied one goal.

Ceres High topped Kimball 2-1 on Saturday.

Torres and Quintanilla led the way with one goal each.

"Our midfielders and defenders worked very well together," Saldate said. "The kids stepped up."

Ceres High will host Beyer on Thursday at 5 p.m.
