Central Valley’s wrestling program defeated crosstown-rival Ceres High in dominant fashion on Dec. 6 at Phil de la Porte Gymnasium.

Central Valley’s boys team won 12 of 14 matches en route to posting a 70-12 victory over Ceres High.

“We’re both young,” Beckhart said. “I expected it to be close. Once you start winning matches, it’s contagious. They’ll be a different team when league comes around.”

Dawgs take second

Ceres High School’s girls wrestling program placed second at the Beauty and the Beast Invitational on Saturday in Madera.

“It’s the first team plaque we’ve won since I started coaching here,” Bulldogs’ head coach Curtis Hulstine said. “I’m really proud of the girls.”

Ceres High totaled 130.5 points.

Atwater (149) claimed the team title.

Porteville (106) finished third.

“I didn’t pay attention to the team score until the end of the tournament,” Hulstine said. “It just goes to show what we can do if we have a full team.”

Ceres High had six individual placers.

Madeline Schultz captured the 170-pound title.

She posted a 3-0 record.

Each individual champion received a rose encased in glass.

“She didn’t give up a single point the whole tournament,” said Hulstine.

Alanize Moreno placed third with a 1-1 record at 235 pounds.

Makynzie Hale placed fourth with a 3-2 record at 189 pounds.

Jazmyne Arendt placed fourth with a 4-2 record at 160 pounds.

Hawks medal

Ten members of Central Valley High School’s girls wrestling program brought home medals from the Clash Before Christmas this past weekend.

The event was staged on Saturday at Pacheco High School.

Brianna Espinoza took first with a 3-0 record in the 225-pound weight class.

Soriah Corona took first with a 3-0 record at 110 pounds.

Mia Mendoza (2-1, 159s), Samantha Padilla (2-1, 115s), Jayden Corona (2-1, 106s) and Alicia Espinoza (1-2, 168s) all placed second in their respective weight classes.

Yahaira Torres (1-2, 119s), Natalie Garcia (1-2, 119s), Keilany Torres (1-2, 111s) and Vanessa Mendoza Balbuena (0-3, 198s) finished third.

“I’m very happy,” Central Valley girls head coach Brandy Cordova said. “Seeing how they’ve been wrestling the last couple weeks, it’s not a surprise. These girls give 110 percent every single time they get on the mat.”

The Hawks claimed the Rodeo Invitational championship the previous week in Clovis.

“All these tournaments are practice for league,” Cordova said.
