A woman died in a Thursday evening crash of two vehicles at the Hatch Road entrance of Home Depot, Ceres Police Department announced.

The crash occurred at approximately 7:55 p.m. in the westbound lanes. According to police, the front of a westbound 1998 Nissan Frontier pickup collided with the right passenger side of a 2006 Chevy Cobalt turning into the Home Depot parking lot from eastbound Hatch Road. The impact flipped the Nissan onto its roof in the roadway and sent the Chevy into the planter area outside of Burger King. Officers arrived and found one occupant in critical condition and pinned inside of the Chevy.

The driver of the Chevy, Bertha Aguilar, 49, of Modesto, suffered moderate injuries and was transported to a local hospital where she was admitted. Her adult female passenger suffered fatal injuries. Her identity was not released pending notification of relatives by the Stanislaus County Coroner's Office.

Police said that Juan Castellanos-Alvarez of Modesto, the 28-year-old driver of the pickup suffered only minor injuries and was treated at a local hospital before being released.

Investigators did not say who had the right of way during the crash. The intersection is controlled by a protective-permissive traffic signal light which allows for some left turn movements on a protective arrow and at other times when it is clear by a green light.

There was no indication that alcohol or drugs were a factor, said a Police Department press release.

The Ceres Police Traffic Unit is investigating the cause of the collision. Any witnesses to the collision or persons who have information regarding this collision is asked to call Officer Jerry Kessler at 538-5620.
