Four Ceres High varsity boys soccer players garnered all-league honors, including Leo Antonio, Marcus Castrejon, Jose Cuevas and David Magana. The announcement was made on Nov. 14.

Antonio, Castrejon, Cuevas and Magana led the Bulldogs to a fourth-place finish in the Modesto Metro Conference standings (6-8-1).

Antonio earned first-team, all-MMC honors. The senior offensive midfielder tallied seven goals and four assists.

“I wasn't surprised with him getting it,” Ceres coach Ryan Cerny said. “I definitely think he was one of the best players in the league. He did everything.”

Castrejon and Cuevas earned second-team, all-MMC honors.

Castrejon, a senior left midfielder, tallied four goals and seven assists.

“I think he could have made first team,” Cerny said. “But do to our performance, we got squeezed out of some votes.”

Cuevas, a senior defensive center midfielder, tallied two goals and three assists.

“When I put him out on the field, he always did his job,” Cerny said. “He was one of the most skilled players on our team. He was one of the fastest players in league.”

Magana, a senior sweeper, earned honorable-mention honors.

“He deserved that,” Cerny said. “He was my most solid defender.”

Castrejon and Melky Calderon claimed top honors at the team's award banquet, held at Me-N-Ed's Pizzeria on Nov. 11.

Castrejon won the Most Valuable Player award.

“He was our leader this year,” Cerny said. “He carried us through some games at the end of the season.”

Calderon won the Coach's award. The senior right fullback was a role model.

“He started every game and did not miss one practice the entire season,” Cerny said. “He deserved some recognition.” - By DALE BUTLER / Staff reporter of the Ceres (Calif.) Courier
