CHS dominates spring crosstown-rivalry series

Crosstown-rivals Ceres High and Central Valley faced off in six varsity sports this spring.

The Bulldogs had a 1.000 winning percentage against the Hawks during the Western Athletic Conference regular season.

Ceres High won the overall win-loss battle, 18-0.

The Bulldogs experienced success against the Hawks in boys tennis, boys golf, softball, baseball, swimming and track and field.

BOYS TENNIS
Ceres High beat Central Valley three times.

The Bulldogs improved their head-to-head record versus the Hawks to 23-0 with a 6-3 home victory on April 12.

Ceres High's Nolan McCaig defeated Central Valley's Ruben Morales 6-2, 6-0 in No. 1 singles play.

Jorge Campos defeated Juan Zaragoza 6-4, 6-2 in No. 4 singles play.

Donnavin Koeurn defeated Roman Ortiz lost 7-5, 6-2 in No. 5 singles play.

Darren Polanes defeated Rogelio Perez lost 6-4, 6-1 in No. 6 singles play.

Juan Hernandez and Will Rodriguez defeated Max Sanchez and Jesus Cuevas 6-4, 6-3 in No. 1 doubles play.

Gurraj Purewal and Tarandeep Singh defeated Adrian Gomez and Ivan Jimenez 4-6, 6-4, 7-6 (10-4) in No. 3 doubles play.

The WAC-champion Bulldogs (14-1) edged the fourth-place Hawks (7-8) twice by identical scores of 5-4.

Polanes' three-set (4-6, 6-4, 6-4) triumph over Ralph Afortunado in No. 6 singles play propelled Ceres High past host Central Valley on March 31.

McCaig defeated Morales 6-0, 6-0 in No. 1 singles play.

Christian Pimentel defeated Zaragoza lost 6-1, 6-4 in No. 2 singles play.

Koeurn defeated Perez 6-1, 6-2 in No. 4 singles play.

Campos defeated Ortiz 6-2, 1-6, 6-2 in No. 5 singles play.
The Bulldogs won two of three doubles and three of six singles matches in beating the Hawks on March 13 at Ceres High.

Hernandez and Angelo Marino secured the team victory. The duo topped Sanchez and Cuevas 6-4, 6-3 in No. 1 doubles play.

Tony Heras and Erik Haro defeated Gomez and Jimenez 6-4, 6-4 in No. 2 doubles play.

McCaig defeated Lazcano 6-0, 6-0 in No. 1 singles play.

Campos defeated Zaragoza 6-1, 6-2 in No. 4 singles play.

Polanes defeated Ortiz 6-0, 7-5 in No. 6 singles play.

BOYS GOLF
Gary Condit, Jayden Panyanouvong, Braden Hurst, Jake Nevarez, James Cervantez and Zac Chapman all contributed as Ceres High continued its run of dominance against Central Valley.

The first-place Bulldogs topped the last-place Hawks during all six of the conference's cluster tournaments.

Ceres High outshot Central Valley, 423-639, 424-576, 305-389, 427-587, 434-609 and 341-418, en route to successfully defending its WAC title.

SOFTBALL
Ceres High beat Central Valley twice on its way to claiming its fourth consecutive WAC championship.

The Bulldogs improved their all-time record versus the visiting Hawks to 22-0 with an 8-2 win on May 5.

Ceres High pitcher Callie Nunes retired 18 Central Valley batters by strikeout.

Nunes surrendered just two hits as Brianna Quiroz and Cheyenne Brincat both singled.

Andrea Duran led the way on offense, finishing 3-for-4 with one homer, four RBIs and one run.

Vianney Perez batted 2-for-4 with one homer, three RBIs and two runs.

Rayohna Sagapolu batted 1-for-2 with one RBI and one run.

Priscilla Chavez batted 1-for-3 with two runs.

Shelby Veuve batted 2-for-5 with two runs.

The Bulldogs shut out the Hawks 6-0 during their first meeting on April 10 at Ceres High.

Nunes tossed a one-hitter.

She had 17 strikeouts and no walks in seven innings.

Nunes singled twice on offense.

Sagapolu batted 3-for-4 with one double, two RBIs and one run.

Perez batted 1-for-4 with one double, one RBI and one run.

Rebecca DeLeon batted 2-for-3 with two RBIs.

Duran batted 1-for-3 with two runs.

Veuve batted 3-for-4 with one run.

The Bulldogs (9-1) and Hawks (2-8) finished first and fourth, respectively, in the WAC standings.

BASEBALL
The second-place Bulldogs won by a combined score of 22-4 while posting a 3-0 record against the Hawks.

Ceres High wrapped up WAC play with a 4-2 win at Central Valley on May 9.

Down 2-0, the Bulldogs scored one run in the top of the second inning and three in the sixth to complete the comeback.

Ceres High freshman pitcher Dalton Durossette yielded two runs and three hits with five strikeouts over five innings.

Adrian Magdaleno earned his second save of the season while tossing two innings of relief.

Magdaleno surrendered no runs and one hit with one strikeout and no walks.

Zach Kommavong starred on offense, finishing 3-for-3 with one RBI and one run.

Brock DeWitt batted 2-for-4 from the plate with two RBIs.

Ricky Lopez batted 1-for-4 with one run.

Adrian Lujan and Eric Davis both scored once.

Ismael Ontiveros knocked in one run.

The host Bulldogs blanked the Hawks 4-0 on Senior Day on May 4 at Art McRae Field.

Ceres High pitcher Blane Abeyta tallied a career-high 13 strikeouts in shutting down Central Valley for 52/3 innings.

Abeyta allowed just one hit as Hawk Alex Solis singled in the top of the first inning.

Ontiveros gave up no runs and no hits with one strikeout and one walk in 11/3 innings of relief.

Abeyta batted 1-for-3 from the plate with one double and one RBI.

Lopez batted 1-for-2 with one run.

Kommavong batted 1-for-3 with one double and one RBI.

DeWitt batted 1-for-2 with two runs.

Ceres High pounded 15 hits during its 14-2 mercy-rule win at Central Valley on May 2.
