Arrests made in violent assault

Five teenagers affiliated with a Latino street gang have been arrested in a savage Friday beating of a 26-year-old man at Hatch Road and Dallas Street in south Modesto.

Modesto Police said more arrests are expected.

The attack was reported at 6:30a.m. A number of callers saw a severely beaten man down in the roadway at the intersection. Officers discovered the victim had also been run over by a vehicle as he lay unconscious in the road. He was rushed to a local hospital where he is listed in critical but stable condition.

Detectives with the Modesto Police Department Violent Crimes Unit, along with Investigators from the Modesto Police Department Street Gang Unit were able to locate evidence. Two of the vehicles involved were located, and had been reported stolen prior to the attack.

Investigators identified and arrested five Modesto teenagers, all between the ages of 14 and 17, known as being affiliated with the East Side Modesto Norteno criminal street gang, as the suspects. The charges include attempted murder, vehicle theft, and probation and weapons violations.

Police recovered three stolen cars and seized one gun.

This is an ongoing investigation and more arrests are expected.

The victim’s name is being withheld due to the nature of this investigation.
