DUI suspect tries speeding away from police

A Modesto man who was allegedly drunk while driving was arrested and booked after he tried unsuccessfully to speed away from the officer who noticed he was speeding and swerving.

At 12:53 a.m. on Saturday, Officer George Hooper was patrolling in the area of Mitchell and Fowler roads when he saw a white Ford pickup travelling southbound on Mitchell Road at a high rate of speed. Hooper attempted to catch up to the pickup, which was swerving, and attempted to pull it over on westbound Whitmore Avenue at Central Avenue. The driver ignored emergency lights and accelerated westbound over the highway overpass. Officer Hooper pursued the truck until it stopped on Carpenter Road north of Keyes Road. A high-risk stop was conducted and the driver and two passengers were detained.

Fabian Hernandez, 28, of Modesto, was driving while intoxicated with a blood alcohol level was 0.15 percent. Passenger Joshua Williams, 23, of Modesto, had an outstanding warrant for his arrest.

A 14-year-old girl riding in the backseat was turned over to her parents.

Hernandez was booked for driving under the influence, driving under the influence with a blood alcohol level above .08%, child endangerment and recklessly evading a police officer.
Williams was booked for the warrant.
