Stanislaus County Sheriff’s deputies arrested a 38-year-old Modesto man for a shooting near a deputy’s patrol car near the intersection of Central Avenue and Service Road in Ceres as he was on his way to work.

The canine deputy and his car were not hit in the 7 p.m. Friday shooting.

Jesus Cortes was booked into the Stanislaus County Public Safety Center on the charge of the negligent discharge of a firearm. Bail was set at $25,000.

Deputies served a search warrant on a Ceres home while Ceres Police, Modesto Police, the California Highway Patrol, and the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms & Explosives helped securing the perimeter and detained several persons.

Multiple weapons were recovered during the search.

“Other evidence related to the shooting investigation was located, and we are confident the correct gunman was taken into custody,” a Sheriff’s press released stated.
