Ross Middle School in Hughson was placed on lockdown prior to lunch today as a precaution while Stanislaus County Sheriff's deputies searched an adjacent home for a potentially armed suspect.

At 9:45 a.m. the Stanislaus County Sheriff's Department was called to a home near Whitmore Avenue and Verduga Road east of Hughson on a report of an assault with a deadly weapon, said spokesman Sgt. Anthony Bejaran. Prior to deputies' arrival, suspect Derrick Delhart, 51, of Hughson, had fled the scene. Information led deputies to a home next to a church on Euclid Avenue near the school.

"We placed the school on lockdown because the suspect was potentially armed," said Bejaran. "He was called out of house and arrested."

Delhart, son of the Ceres businessman and former mayor Jim Delhart, was booked into the County Jail and charged with assault with a deadly weapon, assault with caustic chemicals and using a firearm during the commission of a crime.
