A late Saturday shooting outside the Midway Market in the 1600 block of Midway Avenue in south Modesto claimed the life of Rafael Avina, 38.

Sheriff's Department deputies were notified of the shooting at approximately 11:30 p.m. When they arrived the victim was lying on the ground in front of the convenience store. Paramedics were unable to resuscitate the man and he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Detectives from the Sheriff's Department had no information on a suspect but collected evidence at the scene.
